During an Israeli raid in the West Bank, an Al Jazeera reporter was shot and killed.  

Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian veteran Al Jazeera journalist, was shot in the face by Israeli forces during a raid into Jenin refugee camp in occupied West Bank [Al Jazeera]

 The Palestinian Health Ministry said Wednesday morning that a journalist covering Al Jazeera was shot dead while covering an Israeli raid in the occupied Westbank city of Jenin.

 She said Shirin Abu Akleh, a well-known Palestinian reporter for the broadcaster's Arabic language channel, was shot and died shortly thereafter. 
Another Palestinian journalist working for the Jerusalem-based Al Quds newspaper was injured but is in a stable condition.

 The Palestinian Health Ministry has said the journalist has been hit by Israeli shelling, with the military not immediately responding to a request for comment. 

 Israel has been conducting raids almost daily in the occupied West Bank in recent weeks amid a series of suicide attacks inside Israel, many of which were carried out by Palestinians in and around Jenin.

 Surrounding the city are refugee camps, which are known as militant strongholds. 


This killed is being condemned in the strongest terms.

We are heartbroken by and strongly condemn the killing of American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the West Bank. The investigation must be immediate and thorough and those responsible must be held accountable. Her death is an affront to media freedom everywhere.
