Russia has launched a nuclear capable missile.
Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile weighs more than 200 tonnes and is able to transport multiple warheads, more than 10, it is believed.(AP).
MOSCOW - The Russian Defense Ministry has announced the first launch of its new Sarmat intercontinental missile.
Russia's Defense Ministry said the missile was launched on Wednesday from the Plestsk launch facility in northern Russia.
And its exercise warheads have shot down a designated target at the Kura Firing Range on the Far East Kamchatka Peninsula.
The Sarmat is a very heavy missile intended to replace the Soviet-made Voyevoda missile, code-named Satan by the West.
Russian President Putin and his defense officials have said that the missile is capable of hitting any potential target.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has called it a very important achievement for Russia's defense industry.
He has also said that Sarmat will ensure the security of Russia from external threats, those who are aggressive towards it, making rhetoric, will make those trying to threaten Russia think twice.
Russia has relied on land-based ICBMs as the core of its nuclear deterrent, and is now relying on Sarmat for decades to come.
