 During Operation Vijay, on 20 June 1999, Captain Vikram Batra, the Delta Company Commander, was assigned the responsibility of attacking Point 5140. Captain Batra, along with his company, moved towards this area from the east direction and without even noticing the enemy. Capt Batra reorganized his squad and led them to direct attack on enemy positions. Leading the squad at the forefront, he boldly attacked the enemy and engaged in close-fisted combat. I killed four of them

.In another military operation near Point 4875 in July 1999, his company was assigned the task of clearing the enemy from a narrow peak at high altitude that had steep slopes on both sides and whose only route was heavily blocked by the enemy.

 In order to complete the action quickly, Captain Batra decided to attack the enemy positions from a narrow plateau, leading the attack, killing five enemy soldiers from very close range in a fierce close-knit fight.

Motivated by his exceptional junior leadership, the soldiers along with him rushed to the enemy to take vengeance and annihilate the enemy and captured Point 4875.

 Thus Captain Vikram Batra made the supreme sacrifice in the highest traditions of the Indian Army by displaying outstanding personal valor and junior leadership of a high order in the face of the enemy.
