The historic leap of #Veer_Savarkar ji today is history-memory.
Veer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar has a unique contribution in the freedom struggle of India fought against the British. They prepared revolutionaries not only in the country but also abroad by risking their lives. This gave a sigh of relief to the British. Therefore, the British government arrested him in London and sent him to Mumbai by a ship named Moria, so that he could be tried and punished in India.
But Savarkar was a very lively person. He studied international law in Britain itself. On July 8, 1910, when the ship was anchored near the port of Marseilles in France, he took a bold decision and asked the ship's security guard for permission to defecate.
After getting permission, he entered the toilet and covered the glass of the door with his cloth and closed the door tightly from inside. A skylight from the toilet opened to the open sea. Savarkar accurately estimated the size of the skylight and his body and jumped into the sea.
After a long time, the security personnel banged on the door and broke the door without getting any reply; But by then the bird had already flown. The security personnel looked towards the sea and found Savarkar floating towards the coast of France. He shouted and called his comrades and started firing.
Some soldiers took a small boat and started following them; But Savarkar, without worrying about them, swam fast and reached that port. He surrendered himself to the French police and sought political asylum there. Because of his knowledge of international law, he knew that he had not committed a crime in France, so the French police could arrest him; But it cannot be handed over to the police of any other country. That's why he took this courageous step. He declared himself independent after reaching the coast of France. By then British policemen also reached there and asked for their captive back.
Savarkar gave information about international law to the French police. It was also a crime for citizens of another country to land on French soil without permission; But unfortunately the French police came under pressure. The British policemen also fed him some bribe. So he handed over Savarkar to the British police. They were taken back to the ship under tight guard and tied in handcuffs and shackles. He was tried after reaching Mumbai, in which he was sentenced to 50 years of Kalapani.
This leap of Veer Savarkar has historical significance even after failing in his attempt. Due to this the slavery of India became a topic of global discussion. This action of France was condemned by his Parliament as well as around the world and the President of France had to resign. It was also discussed at the International Court of Justice in The Hague and the British action was condemned; But Savarkar had reached Mumbai by then, so nothing could happen now.
Savarkar's lovers in independent India urged the French government to build a monument near the port in memory of this historic event. The government of France and the mayor of Marseilles are ready for this; But he says that the proposal for this should come from the Government of India.
