Mauritania: The U.S. and Mauritanian armed forces held joint exercises, including B-52 training with the Mauritanian Air Force and participation from Czech special forces in Atar.

this report checks out. Here’s a breakdown of what’s actually happening, what it means, and the possible implications.

What’s Really Going On

1. B-52 / U.S.–Mauritania Air Exercises

On November 19, 2025, a U.S. B-52H Stratofortress from the 96th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron (based in Barksdale, Louisiana) participated in a joint training exercise with the Mauritanian Air Force near Atar, Mauritania.

The exercise involved Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs) — U.S. JTACs worked alongside Mauritanian counterparts to guide the B-52 in simulated bombing runs (“simulated bombing runs,” close air support training).

According to AFRICOM, the exercise is meant to “strengthen regional security” and improve air-ground integration / interoperability.

Maj. Gen. Justin Hoffman (US Africa Command) said these kinds of exercises are not just capacity-building, but also about projecting power and deterrence.

2. Czech Involvement

The photos from the U.S. Africa Command show Czech Special Forces on the ground at Atar, alongside U.S. and Mauritanian personnel.

This aligns with a defense cooperation pact signed between the Czech Republic and Mauritania in July 2025, where they committed to joint training, defence technology cooperation, and support for Mauritanian special forces.

As part of that agreement, the Czech Republic has deployed instructors (20+ in 2024) to train Mauritanian Special Forces under a NATO mission.

Why It Matters — Strategic Implications

Counter-terrorism / Sahel Security: Mauritania is strategically important in the Sahel region. Enhanced U.S.–Mauritania military cooperation helps both in countering transnational extremist threats.

Power Projection: The deployment of a B-52 marks serious U.S. commitment — it’s not just training, but also a signal of U.S. capability and reach in the region.

European Role in Africa: The presence of Czech Special Forces shows that European countries (via NATO-aligned training) are also deepening their footprint in the Sahel.

Defense Modernization for Mauritania: Mauritania is strengthening its own air and special-forces capabilities. This could raise its regional profile and make it a more capable security partner.

Interoperability: Training like this ensures Mauritanian forces are more compatible with U.S. and NATO partners, which could matter in future joint operations or multilateral responses.

If you like, I can check recent trends (last 1-2 years) in U.S.–Mauritanian military cooperation and whether this marks a shift or escalation.
