UK politician sentenced to over 10 years for accepting bribes to make pro-Russia statements.

Here are the details:

The politician is Nathan Gill, a former Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the UK.

Age: 52.

He pleaded guilty to eight counts of bribery for accepting payments between December 2018 and July 2019.

The payments amounted to around £40,000 from Oleg Voloshyn, a pro-Russia Ukrainian politician.

In return, Gill made pro-Russian statements in the European Parliament and to media outlets, using material (scripts) provided by Voloshyn.

He was sentenced at the Old Bailey (Central Criminal Court, London) to 10 years and 6 months in prison.

The judge, Mrs Justice Bobbie Cheema-Grubb, said that his actions “fundamentally compromised the integrity” of a democratic body.

The police investigation was led by the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command.

There are ongoing concerns about broader political interference; the investigation may also look into whether other MEPs were involved.
