The Scilly Naval Disaster was one of the greatest maritime tragedies in British history. It occurred on 22 October 1707 near the Isles of Scilly, a group of rocky islands southwest of England. Four Royal Navy warships were wrecked, and between 1,400 and 2,000 sailors lost their lives.
Historical Background
The disaster happened during the War of the Spanish Succession. Britain was fighting alongside allies against France and Spain. After operations in the Mediterranean, a large British fleet under Sir Cloudesley Shovell was returning home.

Why Did the Disaster Happen?
